Want to avoid the Crowds in East Africa?

At Mara Plains we believe in keeping the experience intimate and personal, so there are no set camp schedules and no set meal times. The day's activities and meals are tailored around your preferences and the wildlife activities of the moment.

The camp is located in a private conservancy bordering the world famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Guests inside the conservancy are allowed to enjoy nature-based walks and productive night game drives that would otherwise not be possible if you were staying inside the park.

A typical morning starts with an early wake-up call at first light before we set out to explore what animals traversed the area during the night and early mornings when the big cats in particular are most active. Returning to camp for breakfast allows for conversation around the table about what was seen and what were the highlights of the morning's drive. Getting closer to nature on foot is a highlight for many guests and this can be arranged after breakfast for those who are interested. Your armed guide will introduce you to the abundant birdlife and can help you identify trees and local plant species, or sharpen your wildlife tracking skills.

There is usually time for a siesta after lunch. Game drives are arranged for late afternoon / early evening so we can savour the African sunset with refreshing sundowner drinks and snacks before continuing our drive to witness the nocturnal animals as they become more active. A hearty dinner awaits you back at camp. Share stories of the day with other guests and staff, whilst listening to the sounds of the African bush come alive.

Mara Plains guests can also take advantage of the fascinating cultural opportunity to visit a Maasai village (or "Enkang" as it is known locally) and experience the traditional ways of the community. For those who are interested in a hot air balloon safari we can take you to one of the ballooning launch sites for a fabulous early morning experience (This is at extra cost).

One of the Mara Plains offerings is that our guests have the option to book their own private safari vehicle, with their own private safari guide. The additional cost for this service is US$250 per vehicle per day. With this comes the ability to stay out as long as you like to view and photograph what interests you. We have one additional vehicle available for this private guiding service and this should be reserved and paid for in advance to avoid disappointment.

Our staff will teach you how to get the maximum from the cameras and equipment. As the camera is digital, you have instantaneous feedback on what you have

(c) A Canon 100 to 400 lens
(d) A Canon 500mm lens

2) The opening page is too "thin" and I would like to beef this up with the following additions to the opening text.Mara Plains Camp is a small, high quality, six-roomed camp under canvas that is located within the private Olare Orok Conservancy and just a few hundred
meters to the north of the Masai Mara National Reserve boundary. Guests can game drive in both the Masai Mara National Reserve and in the privacy of the neighbouring Olare Orok Conservancy away from the crowds. The Conservancy is a fabulous wildlife reserve of nearly twenty thousand acres, rich in wildlife (including the predators and big cats in particular). The OOC conservancy boasts Mara's lowest vehicle density, no mini-buses and only one guest room per 700 acres. An additional advantage to staying at Mara Plains, is that guests can game drive throughout the newly formed Mara North Conservancy - an area of around 80,000 acres that is in the process of materialising. Leopard George is one of the famous locations within the Mara North Conservancy.

Twelve reasons to stay at Mara Plains?
1) It is one of the smallest and most personal camps in the Mara region with only 6 rooms
2) Mara Plains is a quality tented camp with large rooms, each with their own veranda and en-suite facilities, offering an all in tariff that includes your accommodation, meals, drinks (including alcoholic) and activities
3) The camp has superb staff and guides - amongst the best in all of Kenya
4) The location of the camp is at centre of many predator territories. Rarely does a night go by without the roaring of lions nearby
5) Mara Plains' guests can game drive throughout all the main areas within the Mara eco-system - including the Masai Mara Reserve and its two prime neighbouring private conservancies - the Olare Orok Conservancy and the Mara North Conservancy. These two conservancies total over 100,000 acres and Mara Plains is the only camp that can game drive in the park and within both these two private conservancies.
6) Game drives on the Olare Orok Conservancy get you away from all mini-buses and experience the Mara's lowest density, high-quality game viewing, a rare privilege in the Mara
7) Mara Plains offers possibly the largest range of activities anywhere in the Mara - game drives, quality night drives, nature walks with armed guides, balloon safaris (at extra cost), visits to authentic Maasai villages,
8) Private vehicles are available for guests who wish for more privacy or who wish to set their own agenda.
9) One set of the latest digital camera equipment and quality long lenses are available free of charge for those who have booked and paid for a private vehicle
10) Superb and very productive night drives are a highlight. If there is action happening, the guides are happy to jump in vehicles and go.
11) Mara Plains has flexible meal times with no routine - centred on what is happening out in the field. There is no having to be "back in camp at 9 o'clock for breakfast"
12) Mara Plains commits each year to pay over US$100,000 per annum directly into the neighbouring Maasai communities' coffers to maintain and preserve the conservancies and its wildlife.
