Eric Johnson - (Kalahari Plains Camp, Vumbura Plains Camp, Jao Camp, Mombo Camp)

Thursday 15 Jul 2010

Light aircraft transfer from MUB to Kalahari Plains Camp.

Accommodation based on 3 nights.
Accommodation Kalahari Plains Camp
Room : Tented Room

Dates : Check in : 15 Jul 2010
Check out: 18 Jul 2010
Included : All meals, accommodation, twice daily scheduled camp activities, local drinks and park fees.

Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world.

The camp is beautifully situated on an immense pan and comprises 10 en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each one from which to enjoy the night skies. The main area with lounge, dining area and central bar also has a swimming pool and deck area. The tents and main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water – making this camp 100% solar-powered – and innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside the units comfortable.

Thanks to the diversity of habitats, healthy game populations move through the area and are present to a greater or lesser degree all year long. But it is the summer months (end-November to April) with the advent of their rains that the desert truly comes to life. Short grasses sprout in the pan systems and fossil riverbeds and plains game such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest converge in their hundreds and thousands here to feed. This of course attracts predators such as lion and cheetah; in fact the abundance of game at this time of the year also leads to thrilling lion and cheetah hunts to be seen. During winter, the Kalahari is typically a dry desert-type system, with general game still easily seen including gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as their predators such as lion, one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa, leopard, brown hyaena and even caracal.

Guided game drives unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this wonderful area. Kalahari Plains offers an interpretive "Bushman Walk" where guests gain life-changing insights into the unique culture of this fascinating people.

Kalahari Plains is easily combined with the Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions to provide a comprehensive Botswana experience – and in summer it is simply unbeatable as a wildlife destination.

The reserve offers an enormous traversing area of close on 130,000 acres. The main activity at Vumbura Plains is game viewing in diverse and scenic countryside. Open 4x4 Land Rovers and walks enable game viewing in the savannah and woodland areas. The Vumbura area is possibly the only area in the Okavango where one can see Red Lechwe (an animal that inhabits the fringes of the waterways) and a Sable antelope (an animal that enjoys the dry countryside) on the same game drive. Add in Lion, Leopard, Elephant, cheetah and Buffalo along with all the plains animals and one has an excellent all round wildlife experience in a remote and private part of the Okavango. TARANGIRE NATIONAL PARK

Enjoy a game drive through Tarangire en route to Lake Manyara where you will overnight
The Tarangire ecosystem is the third largest in Tanzania (20,000 square kilometres), of which the park occupies a mere 13%. During the dry season, the park has the second largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania. The unique acacia and baobab vegetation provides a home for over 550 bird species, as well as lion, leopard, buffalo and large herds of elephant. Species such as gerenuk, oryx and eland - rarely seen in the other parks in the north - are also common to this area.

Tarangire Park Fees are included

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake at the base of a sheer stretch of the western Rift Valley escarpment. The north-western area of this lake is protected in a 330 square kilometre national park, which contains a remarkable diversity of terrestrial habitats: the grassy floodplain of the lakeshore, the rocky base of the escarpment, a belt of thick acacia woodland and a lush patch of groundwater forest just inside the northern entrance gate. An interesting bio-diversity of fauna and flora can be observed here and a variety of large mammal species including elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe and lion. Perhaps, however, the most immediately visible residents are the troupes of olive baboon, sometimes found in the company of the smaller and rather beautiful blue monkey. This is also a wonderful location for viewing groups of elephant and, for keen birders, Manyara has recorded almost 400 species due to the wide habitat diversity.

Lake Manyara Park Fees are included

Accommodation at Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 1 night
In : Wednesday 23-Jun-2010 Out : Thursday 24-Jun-2010

Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta streaked cliff above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara's gleaming alkaline waters, the Lodge commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift Valley. Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara's unique birdlife, the Lodge draws on an inspirational architectural motif that melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai "Bomas" (encampments) whilst the vibrantly coloured frescoes lining the walls are designed to depict the colourful intricacy of bird migratory patterns.

The circular, closely-thatched rooms echo the traditional Maasai "Boma" style of construction whilst featuring a vibrant interior design concept that reflects the Maasai people's abiding love of brilliant scarlet-and-indigo checked "Shukas" (cloaks) and bright yellow, white, blue and orange beadwork. Each room has a private veranda and breathtaking views of the shimmering reaches of the flamingo-frosted Lake.

Accommodation at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 1 night

Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees.

Strung around the crater rim, each with its own rock-enclosed balcony, the rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, Maasai carvings and flamboyant prehistoric wall motifs depicting fleeing giraffes, stylised gazelle and plunging buffalo. Each room draws on a cave-grey, indigo-blue and jasper-red colour-scheme, is fully air-conditioned and enjoys uninterrupted views over the crater's unmatched splendour.

SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

Africa's most famous game reserve covers an area of almost 15,000 square kilometres and is renowned for its dense predator population and the annual wildebeest migration. The park is part of the the much larger Serengeti eco-system, which includes Kenya's Masai Mara Game Reserve, and encompasses more than double this area. The greater part of the park is open grassland, patches of acacia woodland and isolated areas of granite rock outcrops called koppies. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be found here along with smaller concentrations of Thomson's gazelle, Grant's gazelle, impala, kongoni, Kirk's dik dik, klipspringer and small numbers of roan, oryx, oribi, eland and waterbuck. There are also significant numbers of buffalo, giraffe and warthog. Elephants are relatively scarce on the open plains, more common in the northern areas and the western corridor. The few remaining black rhino are restricted to an inaccessible park of the park. The most popular animals to be found here in greater abundance than elsewhere on the northern circuit are the cats. Lion, cheetah and leopard may all be seen here along with other predators, such as spotted hyena, golden and black-backed jackals, wild cats and servals.

Accommodation at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 3 nights

Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style. Drawing its inspiration from the circular "Rondavel" dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai Village, the Lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms, spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and papyrus-fringed ponds.

Each room is accommodated in a stone-built, traditionally-thatched "Rondavel", featuring natural stone bathrooms, wildwood balconies, rope-lashed staircases, leopard-print drapes and intricately carved furniture, the overall effect of which is a unique blend of authentic ethnicity and world-class elegance. Dates : Check in : 23 May 2010
Check out: 25 May 2010

Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world.

The camp is beautifully situated on an immense pan just 20km from Deception Valley itself and comprises 10 en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each one from which to enjoy the night skies. The main area with lounge, dining area and central bar also has a separate swimming pool and deck area. The tents and main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and the innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside the units comfortable.

Guided game drives unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this wonderful area. San Bushman experiences provide insights into the unique culture of this fascinating people.

Kalahari Plains is easily combined with the Okavango Delta and Linyanti regions to provide a comprehensive Botswana experience – and in summer it is simply unbeatable as a wildlife destination.

Steve Gordon - (Kulala Desert Lodge, Desert Rhino Camp, Skeleton Coast Camp, Serra Cafema, Ongava Lodge)

Friday 19-Mar-10

Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Windhoek International Airport to Kulala Desert Lodge.

Accommodation based on 2 nights.
Accommodation Kulala Desert Lodge
Room : 5 x Twin Chalets
Dates : Check in : 19-Mar-10
Check out: 21-Mar-10
Included : All meals, activities, park fees, and drinks (excluding premium import brands)

Kulala Desert Lodge is situated within the arid Namib Desert on the private 37 000ha Kulala Wilderness Reserve, and is closest to the iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei. The lodge comprises 15 thatched and canvas "kulalas" ("to sleep" in Oshiwambo) with en-suite bathrooms and verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and has a deck on the flat rooftop where bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under the myriad stars that Namibia's clear skies portray.

The main area, with décor inspired by northern Africa, has a lounge, bar, dining area, plunge pool and wrap-around veranda overlooking the waterhole – a perfect location to view and photograph the desert vista. The overall setting is a true delight to the senses, bringing together the rhythm of Namibia, wholesome meals and intimacy. A waterhole in front of camp attracts a number of local wildlife (such as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and jackal) and provides a perfect location to view and photograph the desert scenery.

Early morning guided nature drives to the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei are through a private gate on the Tsauchab River. World-famous Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous red sand dunes that stand out starkly against the blue sky. These dunes have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously transforming the contours of this red sand sea. The 'vlei' itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turn-around, it becomes a spectacular turquoise lake.

Nature drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with those incredible views, and to catch a glimpse of the denizens of the desert. Another option, at extra cost, is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, with a champagne breakfast being served at your landing site. Alternately a breathtaking morning horse ride into the desert or a sundowner ride are available at an extra cost along with a visit to the driest wine farm in the world, Neuras. This is a full morning activity, at an additional cost, with a tour of the vineyards and wine tasting.

Sunday 21-Mar-10

Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Kulala Desert Lodge to Desert Rhino Camp.

Accommodation Desert Rhino Camp
Room : 5 x Twin Tented Rooms
Dates : Check in : 21-Mar-10
Check out: 24-Mar-10
Included : All meals, activities, park fees, and drinks (excluding premium import brands)

Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the 1-million-acre private Palmwag Concession in northwest Namibia, between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast - few places on the planet can offer this level of privacy and wilderness experience. This desert reserve has a number of fresh water springs that support healthy populations of animals including desert-adapted back rhino and elephants as well as large populations of the endemic Hartmann's mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and greater kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park with over 100 Lions, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown and Spotted Hyaena. Bird life is diverse with several southern African endemics present: Benguela Long-billed Lark, Burchell’s Courser, Bokmakierie and Ruppell’s Korhaan to mention a few. Desert Rhino Camp has eight comfortable canavas walled tents slightly elevated on wooden decking, each with an en-suite bathroom comprising dual hand basins, toilet and a spacious walk-in shower. The tented dining and lounge area offers uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains. Welwitschia (ancient desert adapted plants) plants dot the plain in front of the camp. The primary activity is rhino tracking which is usually by vehicle until a sighting is made by trackers and then on foot. Guests can also enjoy full day outings, with a picnic lunch, on the concession. Desert Rhino Camp is a joint venture between Wilderness Safaris and the "Save the Rhino Trust" - a non-profit conservation organisation that has been working in this area for 25 years. The Trust has been singly responsible for helping to ensure that these rare, desert adapted black rhino survived the slaughter that went on throughout other parts of Africa in the 80s and 90s. Today this population of black rhino is growing in numbers and the area boasts the largest concentration of rhino anywhere on the planet outside of a national park. Community game scouts who were employed by the Trust to help with the patrolling and monitoring all these years are now seconded to the camp and are the trackers and guides. A portion of every guest’s revenue goes to the Trust.

Wednesday 24-Mar-10

Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Desert Rhino Camp to Skeleton Coast Camp.

The Skeleton Coast Park is one of our planet’s most inhospitable, but hauntingly beautiful places – it is wild, desolate and uninhabited. It has everything from roaring sand dunes and windswept plains, to towering canyons and saltpans, and even one of the most productive fishing grounds anywhere.

Fresh water springs permeate through barren sands to create rare oases in the desert that sustain pockets of wildlife. Springbok, gemsbok (oryx), the rare desert elephant, ostrich, Cape fur seals, jackal and brown hyaena - and even cheetah on rare occasions - eke out an existence in this rugged terrain, along with the vegetation like the ancient welwitschia plant which has adapted to the harsh conditions.

The arid desert environment in the Skeleton Coast is within the northern reaches of the Namib Desert. The Benguela current brings cold waters all the way from Antarctica and helps to moderate temperatures. The cool air off the ocean meets the hotter desert air and nearly every morning, a cool mist envelops the coastline, bringing life sustaining moisture to the desert. By about 9 or 10 in the morning the sun’s rays have burnt this mist off.

There are many regions in the Skeleton Coast. On these safaris, we visit the most isolated, beautiful, remote (and private) northern sector of the park, from just north of Mowe Bay to just south of the Kunene River. The Parks have set aside this area for low volume, exclusive safaris.

This 4-day safari is a “flying” safari, starting at Windhoek’s Eros Airport on a Wednesday no later than 10h00 and finishing back in Windhoek on a Saturday in the late afternoon. However once we arrive at the Skeleton Coast we spend all our time on the ground in vehicles and on walks. Everyone on this safari starts and ends together.

We stay all three nights at Skeleton Coast Camp. This is a six-roomed luxury tented camp in the heart of the reserve. Skeleton Coast Camp is built onto an island in a dry riverbed about 20km inland from the coastline. Each of the 6 tents is large, roomy and has a en-suite bathroom. As a result of water shortages, it is unfortunately not possible to offer a laundry service. We have a wonderful old gnarled Leadwood tree which offers shelter from the elements, and this is our dining room for our outdoor meals.

This safari is unlike any of our other safaris. Because of the uniqueness and vastness of this area, most activities are done in 4x4 vehicles that are closed to the elements. All vehicles have pop-top roofs and sliding windows to enjoy the fine weather. There is however plenty of opportunity to walk and stretch the legs too. Activities include either full day nature drives or walks with a picnic lunch, returning to camp in the evening, or half day nature drives or walks returning to camp for lunch and venturing out again in the afternoon. Excursions may include visits to the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, the roaring dunes, lichen fields, seal colonies, Himba villages (small denominations of local currency/cash should be carried if guests wish to purchase curio items from the Himba settlement as foreign currency, credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted) and secret water seeps that attract wildlife like Oryx, Springbok, Giraffe, Ostrich, Brown Hyaena, Jackal and other smaller mammals. Walking also plays a part in the activities; due to the pristine nature of this area many parts are accessible only on foot, as vehicle tracks can damage the environment. Many specially adapted species of plants like Lithops and Welwitschia can be visited in this way.

Even though this is a quality safari, the terrain is harsh, rough and rugged. We will try and make this as comfortable as possible, but we have no way of hiding from the elements. Sometimes we can experience cold temperatures – and then 400m up the valley, we encounter hot desert winds.

Serra Cafema Camp is one of the most remote camps in all of Southern Africa. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of the area and the remote explorer aesthetic, Serra Cafema is an unexpected oasis of luxury and sumptuous spaciousness perched on the Kunene River which forms Namibia’s northernmost border.

Situated under large shady albida trees overlooking the dunes and the Kunene River the camp comprises 8 raised canvas and thatch units each with en-suite bathroom, retractable glass doors and abundant outdoor lounging, dining and shower decks.

The Ozonganda, or public homestead area, comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, sunken lounge, river bar, library, curio shop and swimming pool.

Serra Cafema shares this region with the wonderful and colourful Himba people who are some of the last true nomadic people in Africa. The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water and creates an oasis along its banks surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes.

Activities include enjoying the breathtaking landscape scenes with springbok, ostrich and gemsbok (oryx) dotted here and there, traversing the sand dunes in 4x4 Land Rovers and boating on the Kunene River. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight. Serra Cafema is often visited by the native Ovahimba families who live in the nearby vicinity, which gives guests the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions. One of the highlights of Serra Cafema is the carefully guided quad bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes, while allowing guests to experience a true desert.

Ongava is the ideal place from which to base your activities when visiting Etosha. The 14 air-conditioned rock and thatch units each have en-suite bathroom facilities. Meals are served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp’s waterhole and the lodge also has a shady swimming pool. Activities include game drives in open 4x4 vehicles into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha where animals such as lion, elephant, cheetah, gemsbok, springbok, and hartebeest can be seen at many of the water holes in the park. In addition, hides and walks with guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhino – one of the few private reserves in southern Africa – allowing guests the unique opportunity to see both of these charismatic species.

Thursday 01-Apr-10

Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Ongava Lodge to Windhoek International Airport. Please note that if you are booked on the scheduled light aircraft transfer from Ongava to Windhoek, you miss the morning activity on departure from the lodge.
