Cape Town
This morning (time will be advised) you will be collected from your hotel for a private tour of The Winelands.
Today will be a leisurely experience as we explore the Cape's wine route towns of Stellenbosch, Paarl and Franschhoek. We will taste the "fruits of the vines" and enjoy the charm and hospitality of this unique area.
Estates visited vary and are selected after discussing personal preferences. Examples are Uitkyk, Warwick, Moreson, Mont Rochelle for fine red and white wines and Glen Carlou or Fairview for wine and cheese tastings.
We may have a picnic lunch or enjoy lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area.
For the nature lovers a visit to the Paarl Bird Sanctuary can be included, and we can visit the Afrikaans Language Monument with its indigenous gardens and sweeping views across the Boland.
We drive to Boschendal and visit the historic estate with some of the most beautifully preserved Cape Dutch buildings in the Cape, and its collection of priceless period furniture. This estate gives us an insight into how the early settlers lived at the Cape.
We visit Franschhoek nestled in the "Valley of the Huguenots" where the French first settled in 1688 and can visit the Huguenot Memorial and Museum. We also explore this country town with its lovely antique shops and gardens.
We explore Stellenbosch, the second oldest town in the country, driving along Dorp Street with its beautiful Cape Dutch houses. We visit the museum to see the different styles of architecture in the Cape from the 17th century.
Stellenbosch is a university town and we experience the many shops and galleries it has to offer.
Tue 10th Sep 2002
Cape Town
This morning (time will be advised) you will be collected from your hotel, for your private tour of The Peninsula.
Depart from your hotel and travel along the Atlantic Seaboard coast passing the seaside suburbs of Sea Point, Bantry Bay and Clifton. We will stop on the granite boulders where we have magnificent views of the Twelve Apostles along the Atlantic coast side of Table Mountain, and the beach of Camps Bay. We continue along Victoria Drive past Bakoven and Llandudno to Hout Bay, a charming little village and fishing harbour. We board a boat to see the mass of Cape Fur Seals on Duiker Island (this is weather dependent). The seals are mainly males waiting out their time till they are the right breeding age.
We view Chapman's Peak from the seal cruise as the road has been closed since Jan 2000, possibly opening some time in 2002. Time permitting we can drive to the old lookout point from where the road is closed, for spectacular views across Hout Bay, to the Sentinel and Karbonkelberg mountains. We then leave Hout Bay and travel over the mountain and through the Constantia Valley and over Ou Kaapse Weg to the Noordhoek area. We drive to Kommetjie and Scarborough, little hamlets on the Atlantic Coast. Between June and November there is the chance that we may sight whales along the coastline. These are mainly Southern Right Whales that come into our waters to mate and calve.
We enter the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve and can take a drive off
the main road to the untouched area of Olifants Bay. There is a herd of endemic Bontebok living on this side of the reserve and we have the possibility of seeing them on the beach and in the surrounding "fynbos", our magnificent indigenous floral vegetation with flowering species throughout the year.
We enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants along the coast. We spend time exploring the rocky coastline and fynbos with possibilities of seeing the African Black Oystercatchers and Avocets as well as fynbos endemics such as the Cape Sugarbird and Protea Canary, as well as various Sunbirds.
We drive to the tip of the Cape Peninsula and either walk or take the funicular to the lighthouse at Cape Point with it's beautiful views overlooking False Bay, so named as the early navigators thought they had put into Table Bay! We drive to the Cape of Good Hope, the south western most point of the African continent.
We leave the reserve and drive along the False Bay coastline to Boulders Beach, and enjoy an opportunity to study the only penguins to be found on the continent of Africa, the African Penguin. We continue on through historic Simonstown, with its past and present naval traditions and travel along the coast to Fish Hoek. We return to the city over Boyes drive with views of the fishing village of Kalk Bay and the seaside towns of St James and Muizenberg, returning to your hotel in the late afternoon.

De Luxe and Luxury compartments are elegantly decorated and have single or double beds, lounge chairs, a writing desk, individual air conditioning control, internal telephones and remote controlled television. En suite bathrooms with either a bath or shower are decorated in Italian marble. Other amenities include an on board laundry service, 24 hour room service and a discreet professional butler.
Lunch on board the train is elegantly casual while dinner is more formal and is served on fine bone china with silver cutlery and cut-crystal glasses. High tea is served in the Lounge Car while in the Club Car - complete with card tables, reading chairs and a fully equipped bar - passengers can contemplate the track ahead from the locomotive driver's point of view. This is uniquely captured by a front of train camera and depicted on a large screen. Short films about the areas through which the train passes are also shown.
The Blue Train from Cape Town to Pretoria is a one-night journey and departs from Cape Town Station at 11h00. The train travels through Paarl, framed by the purple Drakenstein Mountain and dotted with beautiful old Cape Dutch buildings. It then makes its way through Worcester, gateway to the Hex River Valley, where most of South Africa's export grapes are grown, then onwards to De Doorn and Touws Valley.
The next town of interest is Matjiesfontein, which was once the headquarters of the British forces. Beaufort West and the Karoo that covers approximately two thirds of South Africa are next. The Karooderives its name from the Hottentot language and means "thirstland".
The train travels though De Aar, the second largest railway junction in South
Africa before reaching Kimberley, famous for its diamonds and the largest hand-excavated hole in the world - The Big Hole. As sunlight breaks, the train begins to follow the "golden arc", a 500 km river of gold stretching from the Welkom gold fields of the Free State to Evander in Mpumalanga and then Klerksdorp and Gauteng, before pulling into Pretoria Station where the journey comes to an end at 12h40.
