The north-western area of this lake is protected in a 330 square kilometre national park, which contains a remarkable diversity of terrestrial habitats: the grassy floodplain of the lakeshore, the rocky base of the escarpment, a belt of thick acacia woodland and a lush patch of groundwater forest just inside the northern entrance gate. An interesting bio-diversity of fauna and flora can be observed here and a variety of large mammal species including elephant, buffalo, wildebeest, giraffe and lion. Perhaps, however, the most immediately visible residents are the troupes of olive baboon, sometimes found in the company of the smaller and rather beautiful blue monkey. This is also a wonderful location for viewing groups of elephant and, for keen birders, Manyara has recorded almost 400 species due to the wide habitat diversity. Lake Manyara Park Fees are included Accommodation at Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 1 night Standing high on the bluff of a dramatic ochre and terracotta streaked cliff above the flamingo-frosted expanse of Lake Manyara’s gleaming alkaline waters, the Lodge commands panoramic views across the volcano-studded floor of the Great Rift Valley. Designed to reflect the brilliance of Lake Manyara’s unique birdlife, the Lodge draws on an inspirational architectural motif that melds swooping avian curves with the gentle concentric patterns of traditional Maasai “Bomas” (encampments) whilst the vibrantly coloured frescoes lining the walls are designed to depict the colourful intricacy of bird migratory patterns. The circular, closely-thatched rooms echo the traditional Maasai “Boma” style of construction whilst featuring a vibrant interior design concept that reflects the Maasai people’s abiding love of brilliant scarlet-and-indigo checked “Shukas” (cloaks) and bright yellow, white, blue and orange beadwork. Each room has a private veranda and breathtaking views of the shimmering reaches of the flamingo-frosted Lake. Circuit discount at Lake Manyara Serena Safari Lodge for minimum 5 nights at Serena Lodges is included Thursday 24 June 2010 Crater Visit Fee is included Today, after an early breakfast, we descend to the crater floor. We explore this amazing area, home to the Big Five, and enjoy a picnic lunch on the Crater Floor. You are almost guaranteed to see 3 or 4 of the Big Five here, as well as hyena, hippo, and a myriad of smaller animals and birds. This is rightly one of the Natural Wonders of the World. Please note that permits may be changed to allow 6 hour visits, either in the morning or the afternoon – we will adjust our travel accordingly should this occur. Ngorongoro Park Fees are included Accommodation at Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 1 night Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees. Strung around the crater rim, each with its own rock-enclosed balcony, the rooms feature brass lamps, embossed leather headboards, wildwood mirrors, Maasai carvings and flamboyant prehistoric wall motifs depicting fleeing giraffes, stylised gazelle and plunging buffalo. Each room draws on a cave-grey, indigo-blue and jasper-red colour-scheme, is fully air-conditioned and enjoys uninterrupted views over the crater’s unmatched splendour. Circuit discount at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge for minimum 5 nights at Serena Lodges is included Friday 25 June 2010 Depart Ngorongoro via Olduvai Olduvai Gorge and optional Masai Village visit. Between Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we visit the famous Olduvai Gorge, where remains of early man were discovered by Louis Leakey. The museum is fascinating, and a resident specialist gives an interesting talk on this area in the past and present. We also have the opportunity to visit a great Masai village in the area, where you will learn about these amazing people, see their homes and meet them – and take as many pictures as you like. SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Africa’s most famous game reserve covers an area of almost 15,000 square kilometres and is renowned for its dense predator population and the annual wildebeest migration. The park is part of the the much larger Serengeti eco-system, which includes Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve, and encompasses more than double this area. The greater part of the park is open grassland, patches of acacia woodland and isolated areas of granite rock outcrops called koppies. Huge herds of wildebeest and zebra can be found here along with smaller concentrations of Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, impala, kongoni, Kirk’s dik dik, klipspringer and small numbers of roan, oryx, oribi, eland and waterbuck. There are also significant numbers of buffalo, giraffe and warthog. Elephants are relatively scarce on the open plains, more common in the northern areas and the western corridor. The few remaining black rhino are restricted to an inaccessible park of the park. The most popular animals to be found here in greater abundance than elsewhere on the northern circuit are the cats. Lion, cheetah and leopard may all be seen here along with other predators, such as spotted hyena, golden and black-backed jackals, wild cats and servals. Accommodation at Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge in a Standard Room on a Full Board basis for 3 nights Set high on the saddle of tree-clad ridge commanding panoramic views over the endlessly rolling reaches and volcanic reefs of the Serengeti, the Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is the ultimate fusion of traditional African architecture and world-class style. Drawing its inspiration from the circular “Rondavel” dwellings and winding paths of a traditional Maasai Village, the Lodge features thickly-thatched, stone-built rooms, spaciously set amongst groves of indigenous trees that are cooled by sparkling streams and papyrus-fringed ponds. Each room is accommodated in a stone-built, traditionally-thatched “Rondavel”, featuring natural stone bathrooms, wildwood balconies, rope-lashed staircases, leopard-print drapes and intricately carved furniture, the overall effect of which is a unique blend of authentic ethnicity and world-class elegance. As for the views, from lilac-streaked sunrise to diamond-domed night, the searingly sensational Serengeti delivers a series of timeless volcanic vistas that are second to none. Dates : Check in : 15 Jul 2010 Kalahari Plains Camp is situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve (CKGR) and offers some of the best summer wildlife viewing opportunities in Africa. Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares (12 million acres), one of the largest in the world. The camp is beautifully situated on an immense pan and comprises 10 en-suite canvas units with a sleep-out above each one from which to enjoy the night skies. The main area with lounge, dining area and central bar also has a swimming pool and deck area. The tents and main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping, spacious views across the Kalahari. Solar power provides electricity and hot water – making this camp 100% solar-powered – and innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside the units comfortable. Thanks to the diversity of habitats, healthy game populations move through the area and are present to a greater or lesser degree all year long. Short grasses sprout in the pan systems and fossil riverbeds and plains game such as springbok, gemsbok and wildebeest converge in their hundreds and thousands here to feed. This of course attracts predators such as lion and cheetah; in fact the abundance of game at this time of the year also leads to thrilling lion and cheetah hunts to be seen. During winter, the Kalahari is typically a dry desert-type system, with general game still easily seen including gemsbok, springbok, red hartebeest and steenbok as well as their predators such as lion, one of the highest concentrations of cheetah in southern Africa, leopard, brown hyaena and even caracal. Guided game drives unlock the fascinating wildlife treasures found in this wonderful area. Accommodation based on 2 nights. Kulala Desert Lodge is situated within the arid Namib Desert on the private 37 000ha Kulala Wilderness Reserve, and is closest to the iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei. The lodge comprises 15 thatched and canvas “kulalas” (“to sleep” in Oshiwambo) with en-suite bathrooms and verandas. Each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes and has a deck on the flat rooftop where bedrolls are placed for guests to sleep under the myriad stars that Namibia’s clear skies portray. The main area, with décor inspired by northern Africa, has a lounge, bar, dining area, plunge pool and wrap-around veranda overlooking the waterhole – a perfect location to view and photograph the desert vista. The overall setting is a true delight to the senses, bringing together the rhythm of Namibia, wholesome meals and intimacy. A waterhole in front of camp attracts a number of local wildlife (such as gemsbok, springbok, ostrich and jackal) and provides a perfect location to view and photograph the desert scenery. Early morning guided nature drives to the spectacular dunes of Sossusvlei are through a private gate on the Tsauchab River. World-famous Sossusvlei is an enormous clay pan, flanked by the famous red sand dunes that stand out starkly against the blue sky. These dunes have developed over millions of years, the wind continuously transforming the contours of this red sand sea. The ‘vlei’ itself only fills after rare heavy rainfall when, in a complete turn-around, it becomes a spectacular turquoise lake. Nature drives and walks are also offered on the private reserve with those incredible views, and to catch a glimpse of the denizens of the desert. Another option, at extra cost, is early morning ballooning, beginning at first light. The balloon safari offers a truly unique experience to soar silently above the magnificent sand dunes and desert, with a champagne breakfast being served at your landing site. Alternately a breathtaking morning horse ride into the desert or a sundowner ride are available at an extra cost along with a visit to the driest wine farm in the world, Neuras. This is a full morning activity, at an additional cost, with a tour of the vineyards and wine tasting. Sunday 21-Mar-10 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Kulala Desert Lodge to Desert Rhino Camp. Accommodation based on 3 nights. Desert Rhino Camp is situated in the 1-million-acre private Palmwag Concession in northwest Namibia, between Etosha and the Skeleton Coast – few places on the planet can offer this level of privacy and wilderness experience. This desert reserve has a number of fresh water springs that support healthy populations of animals including desert-adapted back rhino and elephants as well as large populations of the endemic Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and greater kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park with over 100 Lions, Cheetah, Leopard, Brown and Spotted Hyaena. Bird life is diverse with several southern African endemics present: Benguela Long-billed Lark, Burchell’s Courser, Bokmakierie and Ruppell’s Korhaan to mention a few. Desert Rhino Camp has eight comfortable canavas walled tents slightly elevated on wooden decking, each with an en-suite bathroom comprising dual hand basins, toilet and a spacious walk-in shower. The tented dining and lounge area offers uninterrupted views of the desert and mountains. Welwitschia (ancient desert adapted plants) plants dot the plain in front of the camp. The primary activity is rhino tracking which is usually by vehicle until a sighting is made by trackers and then on foot. Guests can also enjoy full day outings, with a picnic lunch, on the concession. Desert Rhino Camp is a joint venture between Wilderness Safaris and the “Save the Rhino Trust” – a non-profit conservation organisation that has been working in this area for 25 years. The Trust has been singly responsible for helping to ensure that these rare, desert adapted black rhino survived the slaughter that went on throughout other parts of Africa in the 80s and 90s. Today this population of black rhino is growing in numbers and the area boasts the largest concentration of rhino anywhere on the planet outside of a national park. Community game scouts who were employed by the Trust to help with the patrolling and monitoring all these years are now seconded to the camp and are the trackers and guides. A portion of every guest’s revenue goes to the Trust. Wednesday 24-Mar-10 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Desert Rhino Camp to Skeleton Coast Camp. The Skeleton Coast Park is one of our planet’s most inhospitable, but hauntingly beautiful places – it is wild, desolate and uninhabited. It has everything from roaring sand dunes and windswept plains, to towering canyons and saltpans, and even one of the most productive fishing grounds anywhere. Fresh water springs permeate through barren sands to create rare oases in the desert that sustain pockets of wildlife. Springbok, gemsbok (oryx), the rare desert elephant, ostrich, Cape fur seals, jackal and brown hyaena – and even cheetah on rare occasions – eke out an existence in this rugged terrain, along with the vegetation like the ancient welwitschia plant which has adapted to the harsh conditions. The arid desert environment in the Skeleton Coast is within the northern reaches of the Namib Desert. The Benguela current brings cold waters all the way from Antarctica and helps to moderate temperatures. The cool air off the ocean meets the hotter desert air and nearly every morning, a cool mist envelops the coastline, bringing life sustaining moisture to the desert. By about 9 or 10 in the morning the sun’s rays have burnt this mist off. There are many regions in the Skeleton Coast. On these safaris, we visit the most isolated, beautiful, remote (and private) northern sector of the park, from just north of Mowe Bay to just south of the Kunene River. The Parks have set aside this area for low volume, exclusive safaris. This 4-day safari is a “flying” safari, starting at Windhoek’s Eros Airport on a Wednesday no later than 10h00 and finishing back in Windhoek on a Saturday in the late afternoon. However once we arrive at the Skeleton Coast we spend all our time on the ground in vehicles and on walks. Everyone on this safari starts and ends together. We stay all three nights at Skeleton Coast Camp. This is a six-roomed luxury tented camp in the heart of the reserve. Skeleton Coast Camp is built onto an island in a dry riverbed about 20km inland from the coastline. Each of the 6 tents is large, roomy and has a en-suite bathroom. As a result of water shortages, it is unfortunately not possible to offer a laundry service. We have a wonderful old gnarled Leadwood tree which offers shelter from the elements, and this is our dining room for our outdoor meals. This safari is unlike any of our other safaris. Because of the uniqueness and vastness of this area, most activities are done in 4×4 vehicles that are closed to the elements. All vehicles have pop-top roofs and sliding windows to enjoy the fine weather. There is however plenty of opportunity to walk and stretch the legs too. Activities include either full day nature drives or walks with a picnic lunch, returning to camp in the evening, or half day nature drives or walks returning to camp for lunch and venturing out again in the afternoon. Excursions may include visits to the clay castles of the Hoarusib River, Rocky Point, the roaring dunes, lichen fields, seal colonies, Himba villages (small denominations of local currency/cash should be carried if guests wish to purchase curio items from the Himba settlement as foreign currency, credit cards and travellers cheques are not accepted) and secret water seeps that attract wildlife like Oryx, Springbok, Giraffe, Ostrich, Brown Hyaena, Jackal and other smaller mammals. Walking also plays a part in the activities; due to the pristine nature of this area many parts are accessible only on foot, as vehicle tracks can damage the environment. Many specially adapted species of plants like Lithops and Welwitschia can be visited in this way. Even though this is a quality safari, the terrain is harsh, rough and rugged. We will try and make this as comfortable as possible, but we have no way of hiding from the elements. Sometimes we can experience cold temperatures – and then 400m up the valley, we encounter hot desert winds. Saturday 27-Mar-10 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Skeleton Coast Camp to Serra Cafema. Accommodation based on 3 nights. Serra Cafema Camp is one of the most remote camps in all of Southern Africa. Inspired by the pioneering spirit of the area and the remote explorer aesthetic, Serra Cafema is an unexpected oasis of luxury and sumptuous spaciousness perched on the Kunene River which forms Namibia’s northernmost border. Situated under large shady albida trees overlooking the dunes and the Kunene River the camp comprises 8 raised canvas and thatch units each with en-suite bathroom, retractable glass doors and abundant outdoor lounging, dining and shower decks. The Ozonganda, or public homestead area, comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, sunken lounge, river bar, library, curio shop and swimming pool. Serra Cafema shares this region with the wonderful and colourful Himba people who are some of the last true nomadic people in Africa. The Kunene River is the only permanent source of water and creates an oasis along its banks surrounded by rugged mountains and sand dunes. Activities include enjoying the breathtaking landscape scenes with springbok, ostrich and gemsbok (oryx) dotted here and there, traversing the sand dunes in 4×4 Land Rovers and boating on the Kunene River. Walking in the remote mountain and river valleys is also a highlight. Serra Cafema is often visited by the native Ovahimba families who live in the nearby vicinity, which gives guests the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions. One of the highlights of Serra Cafema is the carefully guided quad bike excursions that tread lightly on the dunes, while allowing guests to experience a true desert. Tuesday 30-Mar-10 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Serra Cafema to Ongava Lodge. Accommodation based on 2 nights. From its beautiful vantage point overlooking a well-frequented watering point and the plains beyond, the well established Ongava Game Lodge is situated along the southern boundary of Etosha National Park in the privately owned Ongava Game Reserve. Ongava is the ideal place from which to base your activities when visiting Etosha. The 14 air-conditioned rock and thatch units each have en-suite bathroom facilities. Meals are served in the main dining area under thatch with a view over the camp’s waterhole and the lodge also has a shady swimming pool. Activities include game drives in open 4×4 vehicles into the Okaukuejo area of Etosha where animals such as lion, elephant, cheetah, gemsbok, springbok, and hartebeest can be seen at many of the water holes in the park. In addition, hides and walks with guides are enjoyed on the private reserve. Ongava has resident white and black rhino – one of the few private reserves in southern Africa – allowing guests the unique opportunity to see both of these charismatic species. Thursday 01-Apr-10 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Ongava Lodge to Windhoek International Airport. Please note that if you are booked on the scheduled light aircraft transfer from Ongava to Windhoek, you miss the morning activity on departure from the lodge. “WE Wish you a Wonderful and Exciting Safari” Luc and Gea Boussauw – (House of Waine, Lake Manyara Tree Lodge, Ngorongoro Crater Lodge, Serengeti Under Canvas, Olakira Camp, Governors’ Il Moran Camp, Bateleur Camp) 04 March 2010 You will be met upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport by an &Beyond representative who will assist you onto your scheduled Tanganyika Flying Company flight departing at 14h30 and arriving at Manyara airstrip at 15h15. Accommodation based on 2 nights. Little Kulala, a luxurious desert retreat, is situated in the private 37 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve – the gateway to Namibia’s Sand Sea with its towering red dunes and clear starry skies. The 11 climate-controlled, thatched “kulalas” (the word in the “oshiwambo” language means ‘to sleep’) merge impeccably into the timeless desert landscape, with exquisite fittings and fixtures, innovative bleached decks each with a private plunge pool. Each unit has a rooftop ‘skybed’ for romantic stargazing, with both indoor and outdoor showers. An elegant entertainment area includes a library, wine cellar, craft boutique, lounge and dining areas; dining under the clear Namibian skies is a highlight. The interiors were designed to ensure guests an all-natural and unique experience in this most beautiful environment. The extensive use of neutral colours, gorgeous textures and natural light reproduce the soothing pastel tones of the desert. Pure linens, cottons and mohair dyed with natural vegetable dyes all make for a very organic camp which takes its inspiration from its surroundings, notably from the magnificent Dead Vlei in the middle of Sossusvlei. The overall mood and feel is cool, serene, organic and sheltering. Desert-adapted wildlife such as ostrich, springbok and gemsbok eke out an existence and are sparsely distributed here. Smaller creatures such as bat-eared fox and aardwolf can be seen at night in the cool desert air, and one bird, the aptly named dune lark, has its entire global distribution limited to the area, so dependent is it on the area’s characteristic sands. Early morning guided game drives to the spectacular towering dunes of Sossusvlei are through a private gate into the reserve. Sossusvlei is situated within the Namib Desert, the oldest desert in the world, which itself is part of the Namib Naukluft National Park that stretches 400km south of Walvis Bay and is sandwiched between the west coast and the escarpment that runs parallel more than 100km inland. Its huge red dunes and flat valley floors make up the archetypical view of the Namib that is world famous. Guided drives and walks are also offered on the private Kulala Wilderness Reserve with incredible views, desert-adapted wildlife and plants. A balloon safari at extra cost offers a unique experience soaring silently above the desert before landing for a champagne breakfast. Sunday 08-Nov-09 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Little Kulala Lodge to Serra Cafema. Wednesday 11-Nov-09 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Serra Cafema to Skeleton Coast Camp. Today you join the 4 day Explorations Safari: Skeleton Coast. Saturday 11-Nov-09 Scheduled seat rate in light aircraft, transfer from Serra Cafema to Skeleton Coast Camp. “WE Wish you a Wonderful and Exciting Safari” Frederick Maris – (Kulala Desert Lodge, Olive Grove Guesthouse, Baines Camp, DumaTau Camp, Royal Livingstone) Thursday 12-Nov-09 Scheduled flight from OR Tambo International to Windhoek International Airport. Accommodation Kulala Desert Lodge Kulala Desert Lodge is situated within the arid Namib Desert on the private 37 000ha Kulala Wilderness Reserve, and is closest to the iconic red dunes of the Sossusvlei. Friday 13-Nov-09 You will be collected from Kulala Desert Lodge and taken on a Namib Sky Adventures balloon flight . Balloon Safaris over the Namib Naukluft dunes offer an unforgettable experience for the visitor to Namibia. The opportunity to glide over one of the most spectacular desert panoramas in the world is a rare pleasure and one that is enjoyed by only a few. The one-hour flight is followed by a champagne style breakfast. Pick up is before sunrise. Saturday 14-Nov-09 45min Scenic flight around Sossusvlei. Mount Kilimanjaro stands 330 kilometres south of the equator, on the northern boundary of Tanzania. Its location, on an open plain close to the Indian Ocean, and its great size and height strongly influence the climbing conditions. Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain on the African continent. It is composed of three extinct volcanoes: Kibo at 5,895 metres (19,3400 feet), Mawenzi at 5,149 metres (16,896 feet), and Shira at 3,962 metres (13,000 feet). It is also one of the world’s highest free standing mountains, its bulk looming 4,800 metres above an undulating plain that averages around 1,000 metres above sea level. Its long axis lies in a north-west to south-west line for 60 kilometres and, at its widest part, Kilimanjaro is 40 kilometres across. The Machame Route is a fantastic opportunity to combine mountain skills and experience. It maximises the time and options available for climbing and allows for a more leisurely pace. The nights are spent camping, and we provide top mountain guides, porters and safari chefs to look after you. Camping equipment is provided and it is carried by the porters. There are no shower / bath facilities while doing the climb, and toilets will be long drops. You will be provided with a bowl of warm water each morning, on request, to wash with. It is advisable to “walk high, sleep low” – so after a short rest at the camps, walk up another few hundred metres and then return to camp for the evening. This will help you with acclimatisation to the altitude and assist with a successful summit. Kilimanjaro National Park comprises the area above the 2,700 metre contour. It includes the moorland and highland zones, Shira Plateau, Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. In addition, the Park has six corridors, or rights of way, through the Kilimanjaro Forest Reserve. The Forest Reserve, which is also a Game Reserve, was established in 1921. The Park was established in 1973 and officially opened in 1977. The Park exists to preserve Mount Kilimanjaro’s outstanding scenic and geological features and its flora and fauna for the use and enjoyment of all people, present and future. This is also the aim of the Forest and Game Reserve below the Park itself, and these different agencies are co-operative in the conservation of all the mountain’s resources. Day 1: Tonight is spent at Keys Hotel on a bed and continental breakfast basis. Keys Hotel is a modern tourist hotel located in the small town of Moshi, offering good views of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is a family run concern, and is a good base from which to commence your climb. There is a swimming pool and garden area, and the staff are friendly and welcoming. Day 2: After an early breakfast, a senior guide will do your climb briefing. You will then be driven to the National Park Gate near Machame Village (approximately 1 hour) where you will meet the rest of your guides and porters. After the formalities at the gate have been completed, you will start your walk through the spectacular tropical rain forest. This section of the cllimb should take you approximately 6 hours to complete, after which you arrive at Machame Hut (3,300 metres). Day 3: Depart Machame Hut and cross the valley. You will climb up rock ridges and hike through heather. It is a fairly steep start, followed by an hour or so of hard uphill, then approximately 2 hours at a more gentle angle through the lower moorlands, which brings you to the top of a rocky bluff. Lunch is normally taken here. From the lunch stop you will start westwards, up towards Shira Cathedral. The last section of this route is relatively flat and easy. Camp at Shira Hut (3,800 metres), a fairly exposed and cold campsite. You may experience rain or sleetand the ground and tents will probably be frozen over in the morning. Day 4: From Shira, continue east towards Kibo, passing the junction, then on towards the Lava Tower. You will be walking at an approximate altitude of 4,500 metres, around the southern side of the mountain. A few steep sections and valleys, some parts that look like a “moon landscape” and quite a steep descent to Baranco. Today is a long and fairly tiring day. This is part of your acclimatisation – walking in height from 3,800 metres up to 4,500 metres, and then overnighting at 3,900 metres. The night temperature at camp will again be cold with night frosts. Overnight at Baranco Hut (3,940 metres). Day 5: Your first obstacle today is to breach the Baranco Wall, a 600-foot rock. The climb over the rock is not a technical one, but it is long, hard and tiring. The guides will use rope on some sections for peace of mind. Once over the wall, the climb becomes easier and extremely beautiful with fantastic views of the crags and crevasses of the jagged peaks on your left. Descend to the Karangu Valley for lunch before continuing onto Barafu Hut (4,600 metres). This is a slow, tough hike as the air begins to get quite thin. It will be very cold today as you will be walking through the clouds. Settle down for an early night tonight. Day 6: Today you will be heading for the highest point in Africa, Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres). You will be woken around midnight to commence the 6 hour hike to Stella Point (5,750 metres), arriving around sunrise. You will be walking in the dark as the ground is frozen and this makes it easier to ascend this steep section. At dawn, from the Crater Rim, rugged Mawenzi is a thrilling sight, with Kibo Saddle still in darkness beneath you, and the Crater’s ice-walls looming ahead of you. The views are spectacular and it makes the entire journey worth every step! Continue another 1 to 2 hours to Uhuru Peak, along the wide paths of the crater rim – peering down onto massive glaciers shining in the morning sun. Arriving at Uhuru can be quite emotional, with the strain of the summit finally behind you and Africa surrounding you! After a few photos at the summit, begin your steep but picturesque decent to Mweka (3,100 metres), stopping for rest and nourishment along the way, arriving in the late afternoon for overnight. Day 7: A 3 to 4 hour descent through the pretty rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the vehicle will meet you. You will be transferred to the hotel (approximately 45 minutes) for a well-needed shower and an evening of celebration by the swimming pool. Overnight at Keys Hotel on a bed and continental breakfast basis. Day 8: The tour ends after breakfast. Park fees for 5 night / 6 day Machame Route Climb. 25 October 2009 Transfer from Keys Hotel to Arusha, one way Private 4×4 vehicle with game viewing hatches for Adventure Grade Camping Safari from Arusha, return to Arusha including equipment (walk-in safari tents (3m x 1.9m x 3m), camp bedroll and bedding, mess tent, tables, chairs, fridges and / or coolboxes), driver / English speaking guide and safari chef, fuel, game drives, all vehicle / staff entries, and Public and Passenger Liability. ADVENTURE GRADE CAMPING SAFARI “Adventure Grade” Camping Safaris are run with a crew of a cook / assistant plus guide. It is a viable option for those keen to camp and stay in more remote places. You are accompanied by an experienced, knowledgeable guide, a camp assistant and a cook – all fully trained professionals who will prioritise your comfort and safety as well as striving to ensure optimal game-viewing opportunities throughout your journey. Meals usually consist of a cooked breakfast or brunch, light lunch and a three-course dinner. Fridges are used for safe and efficient storage of meat and food, and cool boxes are used for keeping your drinks cold – your guide will show you the best places to purchase these prior to departure and along the way. You are requested to erect your own tent on arrival at camp and dismantle your tent on departure. This is very simple to do and takes about five minutes – your guide will show you how this is done. The balance of the chores (cooking, washing up, etc) will be taken care of by the camp assistant and cook. It is important to note that this is a quality camping product, and not a luxury mobile camp. Accommodation is in the public campsites of Tanzania’s National Parks and, despite our best efforts, Wild Frontiers Tanzania has very little control over the quality and standards of ablution facilities at the campsite. Please be aware that the toilets in public campsites are long-drop style without flush. LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake at the base of a sheer stretch of the western Rift Valley escarpment. Lake Manyara Park Fees. Olduvai Gorge and optional Masai Village visit. Between Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we visit the famous Olduvai Gorge, where remains of early man were discovered by Louis Leakey. The museum is facinating, and a resident specialist gives an interesting talk on this area in the past and present. We also have the opportunity to visit a great Masai village in the area, where you will learn about these amazing people, see their homes and meet them – and take as many pictures as you like. Monday 26 October 2009 Crater Visit Fee. Today, after an early breakfast, we descend to the crater floor. NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA The 8,300 square kilometre Ngorongoro Conservation Area is named after its central feature, the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and within which has eveolved an extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals. The crater floor itself is 260 square kilometres and, from the viewing points at the rim, the vast herds of wildebeest, buffalo and zebra look like mere ant formations winding their way across the grasslands below! The crater is also home to a great diversity of environments and you may encounter all of the large herbivores mentioned above, as well as lions, hyenas, jackals, male elephants (female and family groups tend to stay up on the higher slopes) and, in the forest around the crater, the occasional leopard and bushbuck. There is an active black rhino breeding project inside the crater and you may be lucky enough to spot some of these magnificent, shy beasts during your tour, but sightings are limited as breeding areas are strictly protected and usually closed to public access. Ngorongoro Park Fees. Tuesday 27 October 2009 SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK Africa’s most famous game reserve covers an area of almost 15,000 square kilometres and is renowned for its dense predator population and the annual wildebeest migration. Serengeti Park Fees. Thursday 29 October 2009 Accommodation at Impala Hotel in a Standard Room on a Bed and Breakfast basis for 1 night The Impala Hotel is located in Arusha, at the foot of Mount Meru and adjacent to a quiet residential area, just one kilometre from the town centre and 30 minutes from the Kilimanjaro International Airport. The Serengeti ecosystem’s diverse habitats range from vast open grassland plains to acacia strewn savannahs and rocky outcrops, and sustain more than thirty species of large herbivores and over five hundred varieties of birds. In what is said to be the largest movement of animals on the planet, wildebeest, zebra and gazelle herds number in their millions and follow the seasonal rains in search of water and fresh grazing. The Migration is beyond doubt one of the wonders of the animal world. A million and more animals playing out their lives in the Serengeti ecosystem, watched all the way by lions, hyenas and crocodiles looking for dinner.
On this awesome safari, guests are given the unique opportunity to roam around the Greater Serengeti in authentic Nomad fashion. The camps are semi nomadic, meaning they won’t actually move during a guests visit, shadowing the Migration so guests, their own Tanzanian driver/guide and private 4WD vehicle, are as close to a million wildebeest as possible.

The region has all the habitat diversity to make it a haven for wildlife. Activities are diverse and allow guests to spend time on the water (if water levels permit this), on land and occasionally on foot. Day and night game drives are conducted in open 4×4 vehicles along the Savuti Channel and the banks of Linyanti River. There are many hides in the area where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing up close and away from a vehicle. One of the best hides is right at the source of the Savuti and many species of wildlife and birdlife can usually be enjoyed from this hide. The area is famous for its elephant concentrations in the winter months and for the great general game viewing all year. Huge herds of elephant congregate in winter along the waterways and lagoons and at waterholes that are located along the Savuti channel. All the predators such as lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and wild dog feast on the prey species in the area including impala, zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, lechwe and tsessebe.

The Tarangire ecosystem is the third largest in Tanzania (20,000 square kilometres), of which the park occupies a mere 13%. During the dry season, the park has the second largest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania. The unique acacia and baobab vegetation provides a home for over 550 bird species, as well as lion, leopard, buffalo and large herds of elephant. Species such as gerenuk, oryx and eland -rarely seen in the other parks in the north -are also common to this area.
Lake Manyara is a shallow, alkaline lake at the base of a sheer stretch of the western Rift Valley escarpment. The north-western area of this lake is protected in a 330 square kilometre national park, which
contains a remarkable diversity of terrestrial habitats: the grassy floodplain of the lakeshore, the rocky base of the escarpment, a belt of thick acacia woodland and a lush patch of groundwater forest just
inside the northern entrance gate.
Lake Manyara Camp Fees for private campsite.
The 8,300 square kilometre Ngorongoro Conservation Area is named after its central feature, the Ngorongoro Crater, which is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, and within which has eveolved an
extraordinary natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest populations of large mammals. The crater floor itself is 260 square kilometres and, from the viewing points at the rim, the vast herds of wildebeest, buffalo and zebra look like mere ant formations winding their way across the grasslands below! The crater is also home to a great diversity of environments and you may encounter all of the large
herbivores mentioned above, as well as lions, hyenas, jackals, male elephants (female and family groups tend to stay up on the higher slopes) and, in the forest around the crater, the occasional leopard and bushbuck. There is an active black rhino breeding project inside the crater and you may be lucky enough to spot some of these magnificent, shy beasts during your tour, but sightings are limited as breeding areas are strictly protected and usually closed to public access.
the Big Five here, as well as hyena, hippo, and a myriad of smaller animals and birds. This is rightly one of the Natural Wonders of the World. Please note that permits may be changed to allow 6 hour visits, either in the morning or the afternoon -we will adjust our travel accordingly should this occur.

larger Serengeti eco-system, which includes Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Reserve, and encompasses more than double this area. The greater part of the park is open grassland, patches of acacia woodland and solated areas of granite rock outcrops called koppies.
Please note: The Masai Village visit is an additional per vehicle c Between Ngorongoro and Serengeti, we visit the famous Olduvai Gorge, where remains of early man were discovered by Louis Leakey. The museum is facinating, and a resident specialist gives an interesting talk on this area in the past and present. We also have the opportunity to visit a great Masai village in the area, where you will learn about these amazing people, see their homes and meet them and take as many pictures as you like.
